Oh, duh. Well, some people use LJ as a computer diary of sorts. Some of their private thoughts in a convenient place that doesn't take up room on their hard drive, is fairly reliable, and shouldn't be seeable by anyone else.
Personally, I don't have Private posts -- the most secure a post will be is Friends Only, but I could probably guess why somebody might make some posts Private...
